Differences & Controversy[]

Donghua's adaptation of the novel caused a lot of controversy among the original fans of the novel, due to the plot, character design, and other elements of the novel being completely refinished. Furthermore, many fans have commented that the Supernatural elements have been changed to Science Fiction, and have been scoffing at likening the changes to Marvel films.

Character Design[]

Shen La[]

Shen La didn't use the Wu Rendi's dagger at the beginning of the story, nor did he get huge power from Lin Huo.

Wu Rendi[]

Wu Rendi's appearance is not described in detail in the novel, so his appearance in Donghua caused controversy over whether his hair was long or short, and whether his clothes were modern or Republic of China style.

In the novel, Wu Rendi never drank alcohol, as in Donghua.

Yang Xiao[]

No one objected to Yang Xiao's face appearance, but a few objected to his clothes, as it is clearly mentioned in the novel that he was wearing gray tracksuits. Furthermore, Yang Xiao did not change into Miao’s clothes, and his hair only turned white with the help of Wu Rendi after he joined B.P.I, after a short while.

What sparked the fans' most controversy were the changes to Yang Xiao's morality, as Yang Xiao has gray morality and his statement in Donghua that he does not kill innocents contradicts the novel, and only changes his method after joining the B.P.I.

In the novel, Yang Xiao did not have the ability to telekinetic his bronze nails, nor did he have the ability to fly, as in Donghua.

Bai Lu[]

Bai Lu is an exclusive character in Donghua. The role of Lao Yi was replaced by her role, due to the lack of appearance of Lao Yi in the novel and his lack of importance, he was replaced by Bai Lu. However, due to Lao Yi's death later in the novel, Bai Lu's death would be a problem.

Original fans of the novel did not like Bai Lu character. And some mocked that she plays the role of the protagonist's love.

Hao Wenming[]

Hao Wenming's appearance was not quite as old as it was presented in Donghua, where he was described in the novel as being in his thirties. Furthermore, he and Qiu Bulao did not have any major disputes, he was not using a pistol but rather had his own weapon.

Xiao Sanda[]

Xiao Sanda's role and appearance in Donghua is vastly different from the novel.

B.P.I Headquarters Design[]

The B.P.I headquarters did not contain advanced technology, as it is described in the novel as being well-ordinary. The private plane of B.P.I was not very noticeable, as it was also described as well-ordinary, While in the picture of the concept art of The Mausoleum of the Ancient State of Zhi arc, the plane is closer to the description of the novel. Head to the gallery.

Some original fans of the novel have ridiculed the B.P.I headquarters by likening it to S.H.I.E.L.D.

Weapons & Creatures Design[]

B.P.I's Special Pistol[]

In the novel, the design of the B.P.I.'s pistol was not as complicated and exotic as in Donghua, where it was clearly described that the B.P.I.'s pistol was based on the appearance of the QSZ-92 type.

Wu Rendi's Dagger Design[]

In the novel, Wu Rendi's dagger does not have three-edged blade, as it is clearly described as being the size of one foot, and having a double-edged blade. In the concept art of Donghua's poster, a dagger in Wu Rendi's hand is closer to the novel.

Wu Rendi's Pistol Design[]

In the novel, the Wu Rendi's pistol is described as having an appearance not unlike that of a B.P.I's pistol, however the bullets are made of the same Wu Rendi's dagger blade. But in Donghua they do the opposite. Moreover, in the novel, Wu Rendi rarely uses this pistol.

Fire Giant[]

There is no Fire Giant in the entire novel. Some original fans of the novel have ridiculed the Fire Giant by likening it to the Fire Giant from the film Thor: Ragnarok.
